EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy for treating distressing memories and traumatic events, regardless of how “big” or “small” they may seem.

How Trauma Gets Stuck

When a trauma or deeply distressing event happens, the brain’s natural processing system can get stuck. It’s like a file that didn’t save correctly, leading the memory to feel “live” and immediate in the present. This blockage reinforces negative self-beliefs, or dysfunctional cognitions, such as:

  • “I am a failure.”
  • “I am worthless.”
  • “I am not safe.”

These beliefs can resurface in challenging situations throughout life—when applying for a job, seeking a secure relationship, or encountering a new concept in school—and may be accompanied by avoidance, excessive worrying, or acting out behaviors.

The Goal of EMDR

EMDR does not erase memories. Instead, it helps your brain reprocess the stuck memory, clearing the emotional blockage. This process helps to install positive beliefs and facilitates the development of new, adaptive behaviors, freeing individuals from the negative emotional weight of the past. You will be able to recall the event without the intense distress.

Is EMDR appropriate for children and youth?

Yes! We specialize in playful EMDR, integrating it seamlessly into child-centered play therapy sessions. This approach works for children of all ages and does not require them to verbally express their memories or follow complex directions, making it highly effective for young people.
